Table Tennis
Scoring:
A game will consist of 21 points (straight) or 20 minutes. A match will consist of the best of 3 games. Each team will change ends after every game. A point is lost by a player, if he fails to make a good service or a good return, it the ball bounces twice consecutively on his court, if he strikes it twice consecutively, and if he "volleys" it by striking it before it touches his court or if in doubles he strikes it out of the proper sequence. He loses a point also if during play he, or anything he is wearing or carrying, touches the net or moves the playing surface, or if his free hand touches the playing surface.
Service (toss):
The right of service will be decided by a rally winner unless one team concedes service.
Lets:
A let is a rally from which no point is scored. It occurs when:
- the ball touches the net or its supports in service, provided the service is otherwise good;
- a service is delivered when the receiver or his partner is not ready, provided no attempt has been made to return the ball;
- a player fails to make a good service or return through an accident beyond his control, such as a movement by a spectator or a sudden noise:
- the ball is broken in play;
- a rally is interrupted to correct a mistake in playing order or ends;
- a rally is interrupted to apply the expedite system.
The ball goes out of play:
When it touches any object other than the playing surface, the net or its supports, the racket or the racket hand below the wrist, or when the rally is decided in any other way as a point or a let.
Change of service:
The service in singles and doubles passes from one player to another after every five points scored, unless both players or pairs score 20 points, when the service changes after every point. In doubles the second server is the player who received first, the third server is the partner of the player who served first, and the fourth server the partner of the player who received first, after which the sequence is repeated until the end of the game.
The expedite system:
The expedite system is introduced if a game is unfinished 20 minutes after the start. It then applies to the rest of the game and to all remaining games of the match. Thereafter, each player serves in turn and if the service and 12 successive strokes of the server are returned by the receiver, the server loses a point. The return strokes of the receiving player or pair are counted out loud, from 1 to 13, by an official other than the umpire.
Officials:
The umpire or the Intramurals Sports Director will be the final authority on calls made during each match. Arguing a decision could result in loss of points, a game, a match, or disqualification from the tournament.
