WHAT
IS AN INTERNSHIP?
Any career related work experience which provides exposure to an occupation,
industry, or career in which you have an interest.
Employers said their internship programs were their most effective
means of recruiting new graduates (NACE-Job Outlook 2004 Report).
WHY
SHOULD I DO AN INTERNSHIP?
Experience and networking are both crucial to finding a job and an
internship will offer you both. Being in a position that relates to
your field of interest allows you to see first hand what goes on.
Think of it as a dress rehearsal for your future. It will give you
the opportunity to impress employers with your skills, and possibly
land you a future job offer. Internships also allow you to network,
which may open doors for other future internships or job opportunities.
WHERE
SHOULD I LOOK FOR AN INTERNSHIP?
Take a look at your career services department, company websites,
friends, family, faculty etc. Tell everyone you know you’re
looking for an internship…you never know where an opportunity
may lie.
SHOULD
I DO MORE THAN ONE INTERNSHIP?
Absolutely! You should take advantage of any and all employment opportunities.
Plus, multiple internships could increase your starting salary.
HOW
LONG DOES AN INTERNSHIP LAST?
Due to the flexibility internships allow, they can take place at any
time of the year. The objective is to allow enough time for you to
learn about the organization and the job at hand.
WHERE
CAN I DO INTERNSHIPS? DOES IT HAVE TO BE WHERE I WANT TO RESIDE AFTER
GRADUATION?
No, not necessarily. Experience is experience-even if it takes place
in a different state. Internships are available everywhere. In fact,
this is a great opportunity to investigate different living environments.
WHAT
IF THE ORGANIZATION I WANT TO WORK WITH HAS NEVER HAD AN INTERN?
Explain to them advantage of having an intern. Tell them about your
strongest selling points and what you contributions you could make
to their organization. Get your career services department involved,
who will have resources for the employer, and will be happy to help
him/her develop an internship program.
WHAT
ABOUT MONEY?
Internships are about the experience so many internships don’t
pay. Think twice before turning down an internship that doesn’t
include a paycheck. It may be a terrific experience that will bring
bigger and better things down the road.
HOW SHOULD I ACT ONCE I’VE LANDED THE INTERNSHIP?
Learn everything that you can. Learn the names of everyone you meet.
This is an opportunity to show how valuable you really are. Go above
and beyond their expectations! Take advantage of every opportunity.
WHAT
“TOOLS” DO I NEED TO LAND AN INTERNSHIP?
