Financial Aid Information for Study Abroad Students

OCU Study abroad scholarships

 

Oklahoma City University offers scholarships to OCU students studying abroad on approved programs. Selection is based on financial need, academic success, and university/community engagement. Preference is given to students who opt for longer programs (semester or yearlong), but students are also encouraged to apply for scholarship aid to assist with summer, short-term, and/or faculty-led study abroad programs.  The OCU scholarship request form is contained in the OCU Study Abroad Application.

 

Deadlines for priority consideration are as follows:

Spring semester programs: November 1

Summer programs: February 1

Fall semester programs: March 15

Academic Year programs that commence with the fall semester: March 15

Academic Year programs that commence in with the spring semester: November 1

January-Term or Spring Break programs: November 1

Boren Awards for International Study Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Preference is given to geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. The on-campus application deadline for the 2012-2013 Boren Scholarship is Tuesday, January 10, 2012.

 

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan. Undergraduate students of any major are eligible to apply. The awards are typically $2,500 for semester-long programs or $4,000 for academic-year programs. The application deadline is in April.

 

The BUTEX Scholarships: Each year BUTEX awards a number of scholarships to students studying abroad for either a semester or an academic year. The value of each scholarship is £500 and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university. Details of this scholarship are generally posted annually in January.

Eastern Europe American Councils for International Education: Grants available for a variety of research programs and language training.

Federal Scholarships for Language Study in China through CIEE  The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Council funding under the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program to provide financial assistance to students participating in the Chinese language programs offered by the Council Study Centers at Peking University, East China Normal University, Nanjing University and National Chengchi University.

Application Deadlines: Summer, Fall and Academic Year programs: April 1
Spring and Calendar Year programs: November 1

 

Freeman-ASIA Scholarships Designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning on studying overseas in East or Southeast Asia.

 

Fund for Education Abroad (FEA)

The FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships.  Applicants must be committed to supporting education abroad in his/her campus community through work with the FEA and his/her campus education abroad staff upon return.  FEA strongly encourages students to apply who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad -- including those studying in a non-traditional destination and those demonstrating financial need.  

 

The Garden Club of America Scholarships:

 

Garden Club of America: Scholarships for Botany students

Purpose: To encourage young men and women who are interested in furthering their studies in field botany and offer an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience beyond the regular course of study. 

Provisions: Provides $2000 annually to one student for summer study in the field. 

 

The Joan K. Hunt and Rachel M. Hunt Summer Scholarship in Field Botany 

For graduate and undergraduate students with preference given to undergraduate students.

Purpose: To promote the importance of botany to horticulture by encouraging young men and women to study field botany and to offer an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the field beyond the regular course of study.

Provisions: Provides $2000 annually to one or more students for summer study in the field. 

 

 

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarships to highly qualified undergraduate students for study abroad, university language or summer courses, senior thesis research and/or internships in the Federal Republic of Germany.

 

Gilman Scholarships Awards of up to $5,000 are made for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding are eligible to apply. This program is funded by Congress and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Students who receive the Gilman Scholarship are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000.  Languages include Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Russian. A full list of Critical Need Languages is posted on the Gilman Scholarship Web site. The deadline for Spring 2012 applications is October 1, 2011. The deadline for summer and fall 2012 will be March 1, 2012.

 

The Global Studies Grant for Student Travel and Study Abroad Designed to support foreign language training and other academic studies abroad, this grant provides supplemental funds for American students who already are studying abroad under the auspices of an official study abroad program conducted by an accredited academic institution. GSF seeks to support a formative experience abroad for the recipient, who also must share this experience with others upon his or her return. GSF is particularly interested in funding the study of strategically significant countries and languages. Among the most significant selection criteria are academic performance (as indicated in courses, grades, recommendations, and other achievements), program merit, and outreach potential.  Grant recipients will be expected to acknowledge GSF's support, to report on their experiences, and to work with GSF to share those experiences as widely as possible.

Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (Ministryof Education in Taiwan)

To encourage students to study Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) established the Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) Program in 2005. This scholarship provides a monthly stipend for students interested in learning about Taiwan’s culture at university- or college-affiliated Mandarin training centers.

 

Institute for International Public Policy Fellowship (IIPP) Sponsored and administered by the United Negro College Fund, IIPP serves to enhance U.S. national security and global competitiveness by promoting excellence, international service, and awareness among a broader, more representative cross-section of the American citizenry. Sophomores of minority backgrounds are encouraged to apply for the 5-year sequenced program that includes study abroad sessions, internships, and international affairs courses.

 

Itoh Scholarship Foundation A nonprofit institute that provides financial assistance for the study of the Japanese language at Japanese universities.

 

Japan Student Services Organization Available for qualified international students already accepted by Japanese universities or graduate schools for a semester or year.


Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship: The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is awarded annually to women pursuing undergraduate or master's degrees in business management.

 

John C. Phelan General Course Scholarships: This scholarship is for students applying to London School of Economics only. It provides between £12,000-15,000 per student for four students accepted to the one-year General Course. It is awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Applicants must be American nationals and currently living in the U.S.

 

Morgan Stanley Japan Scholarships Awards two $7,500 scholarships to US students who will be studying in Japan for the academic year to augment its contribution to the Bridging Project for Study Abroad in Japan. Eligible students include juniors and seniors at US universities with an interest in economics and international finance who have been accepted for study in Japan. Winners may also be considered for internships at Morgan Stanley Japan's Tokyo headquarters.

 

National Italian American Foundation: The NIAF awards scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 on the basis of academic merit to students in two categories:

General Category I: Italian American students who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements. Area of study: open.

General Category II: Students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field, who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements.

 

National Security Education Program Awards usually cover the full cost of study and travel abroad.  Created by Congress in 1991, NSEP was intended to encourage American students to study less commonly taught languages and cultures, especially in nations considered to be of interest to national security. The program also aspires to increase the number of Americans qualified for government service and international diplomacy. After graduation, student recipients are required to work for an office or agency of the Federal Government involved in national security affairs or in higher education.

 

Phi Kappa Phi - Study Abroad Grants Competition 50 grants of $1000 each will be awarded to deserving students nationwide. Writeable applications and all included materials are available on the society's Web site. Please submit your completed packages directly to the Society Headquarters. There is no limit to the number of students who might apply for the grants.

 

Rotary Foundation  Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships of up to $26,000 provide funding for one academic year of study in another country.

 

ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship This scholarship program supports highly motivated and qualified U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute for 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to students of all fields.

 

University of Canterbury (New Zealand) International Mobility Inbound Study Abroad Award: These scholarships offer up to $5000 to support students who want experience one semester or one year at the University of Canterbury as a study abroad student. The first awards will be made in 2012. Application is via the Canterbury Study Abroad Program. A separate application is not required.

Eligibility: Students must have completed a minimum of one year of study at their home university.

 

PROGRAM-SPECIFIC SCHOLARSHIPS

CIEE

Robert B. Bailey Scholarship These awards are named in honor of Robert B. Bailey III, former member of CIEE’s Board of Directors and Professor of Sociology and Director of Study Abroad at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, in order to aid students who have traditionally been underrepresented in study abroad, especially ethnic minority students. Applicants are asked to specify the group to which they belong and which they believe to be underrepresented in study abroad. Applicants must participate in a CIEE study abroad program. Awards vary but usually are $500 to be applied toward the applicant’s CIEE program fee.

GRADUATE STUDY/RESEARCH ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS


The Ansbacher Fellowship for Young Conductors: This fellowship provides young and promising conductors from the U.S. the opportunity to spend up to four weeks at the Salzburg Festival observing leading conductors and artists at work during rehearsals and performances. Fellows will live at Schloss Arenberg, located ten minutes from the Festival Hall, where they also be able to interact with members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, who are in residence at Schloss Arenberg during the month of August.

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships for Advanced Asian Language Study Only available to American citizens and permanent residents of the United States who have a college degree and plan to use an Asian language in their career.

 

Boren Fellowships  Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests. The OCU on-campus application deadline for 2012-2013 fellowships is Tuesday, January 10, 2012.

Davies-Jackson Scholarship This scholarship provides full funding for a first-generation college graduate to spend a year at St. John's College at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. Applicants must intend to study archaeology and anthropology, classics, economics, English, geography, history, history of art, modern and medieval languages, music, philosophy, or social and political sciences. The deadline is typically November 1 for the following fall term.

The Emerging Markets Development Advisers Program (EMDAP) EMDAP is a fellowship program sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by the Institute of International Education, the largest private, nonprofit educational and cultural exchange agency in the United States.

EMDAP is an opportunity for current students and recent graduates of U.S. M.B.A. programs or M.A. programs in international management/ finance/development or international affairs/studies to provide management assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises in developing countries. EMDAP advisers contribute to business development in emerging market countries by using their knowledge of business management practices to identify business solutions in diverse situations. This contributes to achieving USAID’s objectives abroad – specifically, broad-based economic development.
 
The EMDAP grant covers monthly living expenses; housing; language training where necessary; microfinance, business development, or sector-specific training if needed; health insurance, a round-trip airfare from the U.S. to the host country. Other allowances vary from country to country. 

Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs: The Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

 

Eligibility is limited to the following:

  • All citizens or nationals of the United States regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation,
  • Individuals with evidence of superior academic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors or other designations),
  • Individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level.

Fulbright Scholarships The Fulbright program is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. There are two types of awards available for graduate students, Study/Research grants and English Teaching Assistantships. For more information, see the Fulbright web site. Fulbright applications may take six to nine months to develop. Before beginning a Fulbright application, contact the director of academic services at mbenner@okcu.edu

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from outside the U.K. to pursue a postgraduate degree in any subject at the University of Cambridge.

The program aims to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others. The deadline is typically October 15 for the following academic year.

The Marshall Scholarship British Marshall Scholarships provide two years of full funding for young Americans of outstanding ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom at the university of student’s choice. Scholarships cover a minimum of two years and maximum of three. The scholarship is open to students in all fields. Students must demonstrate distinction of character and intellect. Preference is given to students who combine high academic ability with the capacity to play an active part in the life of the university they choose and who display the ability to make a significant contribution to their own society. The Mitchell Scholars Program (sponsored by the U.S.-Ireland Alliance). The Mitchell Scholars Program, named to honor former U.S. Senator George Mitchell's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service. Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of eighteen and thirty are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: scholarship, leadership, and a sustained commitment to community and public service. The Mitchell Scholars Program provides tuition, accommodations, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend. The deadline is typically in early October. NSEP Language Flagship Fellowship: The Language Flagship offers a limited number of fellowships to qualified American students interested in receiving financial support to participate in one of the Graduate Flagship Programs in Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, and Persian. Applicants must have completed their undergraduate degree, be a U.S. citizen at the time of application, have proficiency in the corresponding foreign language, and cannot be employed by the U.S. Government. Award recipients must maintain enrollment at Master's degree granting Flagship Program for the duration of the Flagship Fellowship funding period. 

The Rhodes Scholarship: Rhodes Scholarships offer the opportunity to study at Oxford University for two years, with tuition fees paid and a living allowance provided. American Rhodes Scholars are selected from all over the nation to study in the field of the student’s choice at Oxford. Students may receive a master’s degree or a second bachelor’s. However, the master’s degree is recommended. Candidates must demonstrate qualities Cecil Rhodes expressly defined. These qualities include distinction of character and intellect, which in combination offer the promise of effective service to the world. Taiwanese Scholarship Program  The Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has initiated a special scholarship program to encourage American students to pursue their degree studies in Taiwan and to enhance international educational and academic exchange.
