Marvel L. Williamson, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, discovered early in her pursuit of a career in the sciences that she had a passion for the academic process itself and a talent for administration. Her doctoral dissertation documented activities of college and university presidents, leading to the first published research on the content of presidential work. She has served as a Chair or Dean in public and private universities, and has held business administration positions of great responsibility. She has directed multiple campuses, started programs at all degree levels, and directed a university’s testing and evaluation service. Dr. Williamson enjoys turning mediocrity into success and setting bold goals for organizations. Her ability to empower people and grow strong programs is based on a firm understanding of administrative theory, organizational psychology, and strategic use of data. She believes faculty members are a university’s most valuable investment, and that leaders must be fiscally responsible and communicate inspiring visions of the future. She subscribes to Boyer’s definitions of scholarship, and helps faculty apply those principles for achieving their own success. Dr. Williamson came to Oklahoma from the American Nurses Association in Washington, D.C., where she was the grants specialist and director of strategic planning for the American Nurses Foundation. She has also served as Dean of Health Sciences and Director of the Ellen Finley Earhart School of Nursing at Park University; Vice President for Patient Services at Ransom Memorial Hospital (Kansas); professor of nursing at the University of Iowa, the University of Kentucky, and Albany State University; and as Vice President for two medical businesses. Her Ph.D. is in Educational Administration (higher education) from the University of Iowa. Her MSN was earned at the University of Kentucky, and her BSN from Wichita State University. Dr. Williamson is a Fellow of the Academy of Nursing Education, and is a Certified Nurse Educator. She was also certified as a sexologist by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists in 1981. Dr. Williamson is the author of numerous professional journal articles, book chapters, and three books including Great Sex after 40: Strategies for Lifelong Fulfillment. Dean Williamson has served as principal investigator on 16 scientific research studies, and has an unusually high rate of success on grant proposals. She is a manuscript reviewer for Clinical Nursing Research, Western Journal of Nursing Research, Nursing, RN, Nursing Education Perspectives, and the American Journal of Nursing, as well as for several publishing companies and research grant funders. Her awards include being named as a Fellow of the Academy of Nursing Education; in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, International Who’s Who of Professional and Business Women, and International Who’s Who in Sexology; and receiving the “Dr. Marvel L. Williamson Award” established by the Ellen Finley Earhart School of Nursing, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Wichita State University, the Louisa Davidson Hinde Memorial Award, and American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award. Dr. Williamson has served on the National Coordinating Committee for School Health for the US Departments of Health and Human Services, US Department of Agriculture, and the US Department of Education; on the National School Food Safety Coalition for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and the Sex Education Advisory Panel for the Alan Guttmacher Institute (New York). She has been a leader for the state of Oklahoma in advancing graduate education for nurses and raising the level of cooperation among education and health care organizations for improving the status of nurses and their work. Her hobbies include piano and cooking. She has been married since 1973 to Dr. Paul Williamson, a family physician, Biblical languages scholar, and artist. They have two adult sons, Marcus P. Williamson and Seán T. Williamson.
