OCU Planning Earth Day Activities
Oklahoma City University will celebrate Earth Day with events on April 22. The events are free to the public and will be held in the McDaniel University Center near Florida Avenue and N.W. 26th Street.
OCU’s celebration will focus on water conservation and features a keynote presentation at 7:30 p.m. by Al Sutherland, the OK Mesonet agriculture coordinator for Oklahoma State University’s Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. Sutherland’s presentation is titled “Drought Decisions and Mesonet Drought Tools.”
Sutherland will also participate in a preceding panel discussion at 6 p.m. titled “Watering Oklahoma.” Other panelists will include Shanon Phillips, Oklahoma Conservation Commission Water Quality Division director; Cheryl Cheadle, executive director of the Blue Thumb water quality educational program for the state Conservation Commission; Nathan Kuhnert with Environmental, Health and Safety at Devon Energy; Tom Elkins, administrator of Cherokee Nation environmental programs; and Cedric Bond, an OCU student and kayak team member who is working on a senior capstone project on the Deep Fork River.
There will be display tables throughout the event space beginning at 3 p.m. leading up to the panel discussion. Participants include the Oklahoma Conservation Commission Water Quality Division, the Oklahoma Blue Thumb Association, Friends of Bishop Creek, the Cherokee Nation and others.
