Artist in Residence Teaches Portrait Classes
Oklahoma City University’s artist in residence Mike Wimmer will teach classes on painting portraits and human figures during the Spring 2014 semester. The classes are available to the public on an audit basis.
Wimmer, who is considered one of the nation’s best portrait artists, will teach the classes in the Norick Art Center on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 15 through May 2. Painting the Portrait will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and Life Painting 1 and 2 will be from 2:30 to 5 p.m.
The Painting the Portrait class is open to students who have some understanding of painting techniques and a serious desire to improve their skills. The class will cover the concepts of creating a likeness and capturing the personality of the sitter. It will include the study of lighting and photography for the portrait painter. Most work will be done during class sessions, but occasionally some homework will be required.
Life Painting 1 and 2 is for artists who desire to improve their understanding of painting the human figure. The classes will feature nude figures, so only adults over the age of 18 will be allowed to audit. It is an intermediate to advanced-level class, so each student should have some understanding of color and paint handling.
Students in either class will need to bring their own painting supplies, but the school will provide models, lighting and easels.
Wimmer, who also serves as chairman of the OCU Art Department, painted many of the works in the state Capitol Building. He started working on a national scale primarily as a children’s book illustrator.
His other projects include creating a more kind and gentle Mr. Clean illustration for the popular cleaning products company, the cover art for Disney’s “Lion King” soundtrack, commemorative can designs for Planters Peanuts and an ornament featuring Will Rogers to hang on the White House Christmas tree as Oklahoma’s representative decoration.
