OCU Professor, State's First Public Preschool Teacher, Wins Award
An education professor at Oklahoma City University, Lisa Sielert, was selected to receive the 2013 Helen Harley Award from the Southern Early Childhood Association.
Sielert, the first public school preschool teacher in Oklahoma, is being honored for her 30 years of dedication to early childhood education. She will receive the award during the organization’s annual conference in March in Mobile, Ala.
Sielert was hired in 1979 at West Nichols Hills Elementary School in Oklahoma City as part of a pilot program that became the state’s program in place today. During her two-year term there, one of her duties included organizing the design and construction of the school’s Creative Playground.
Sielert became an OCU faculty member this year. She previously taught at the University of Central Oklahoma for 22 years.Her areas of study include children’s play and its effects on their cognitive, affective and psycho-motor development.
