Oklahoma City University Sends 9 Contestants to Miss Oklahoma Pageant
Nine Oklahoma City University students will compete in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant beginning June 5 in Tulsa.
The university, which has been fondly dubbed “Miss America U” for its tradition of winning pageants, will have a significant presence in a field that totals 45 contestants. Events start Saturday and continue each day until the finals June 9.
Darwina Marshall, executive director and president of the Miss OCU Pageant, said she is proud to accompany such a large group of contenders.
“We’re excited to show the rest of the state why we have such a strong reputation of having the most gifted and hard-working students,” Marshall said. “These young women have been preparing for this contest for many years, and I think each has an excellent chance to win.”
Oklahoma City University will provide scholarship offerings to all contestants in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant and the Miss Oklahoma’s Outstanding Teen contest. The scholarships are valued at approximately $490,000. The winner of the Miss Oklahoma’s Outstanding Teen contest will be offered full tuition for eight semesters, and Miss Oklahoma will be offered reduced tuition for eight semesters.
OCU has contributed approximately $2.25 million in educational scholarships to more than 340 pageant contestants over the past 56 years.
There have been 24 Miss Oklahoma winners and three Miss Americas — Jane Jayroe, Susan Powell and Shawntel Smith — from Oklahoma City University.
