Oklahoma City University Hosts ‘Jesus Seminar on the Road’
Oklahoma City University will host its first Jesus Seminar on the Road program May 11 and 12, featuring two nationally renowned Biblical scholars. The events are open to the public and will include a lecture and workshops under the title “Paul in Two Worlds: A Jew and Christian Talk about the Apostle.”
Pamela Eisenbaum and Stephen Patterson will lead workshops about the Apostle Paul, the first Christian theologian. Sessions will include an exploration of Paul as a Jewish messenger, how Protestants have misinterpreted his messages, what a new understanding of his work could mean for Jews and Christians living in a religiously plural age and an open discussion period.
Eisenbaum is an associate professor of Biblical studies and Christian Origins at Iliff School of Theology in Denver. She is one of four Jewish New Testament scholars teaching in Christian theological schools. She released her book “Paul Was Not a Christian” in 2010.
Patterson is the Atkinson Professor of Religious and Ethical Studies at Willamette University in Salem, Ore., and chairman of the Jesus Seminar on Christian Origins. He has published widely on the Gospel of Thomas, including the Q-Thomas reader from Polebridge Press. His latest book is “Beyond the Passion: Rethinking the Death and Life of Jesus.”
Registration for all sessions is $60 before April 27 and $75 thereafter. Additional family members may register for $50. Students from any Oklahoma college may attend for half price. Single sessions are $20 for the opening lecture, $30 for a morning workshop and $30 for an afternoon workshop. Those who volunteer to help with the event may attend free of charge.
All events at OCU will be held in the Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel on N.W. 23rd Street between Kentucky and Blackwelder avenues.
