
OCU Community Dance Center Enrolling for Summer Ballet Classes
OKLAHOMA
CITY – Local dancers who
want to improve their ballet technique can enroll in summer classes at Oklahoma
City University with legendary dance teacher Jo Rowan and instructor Kay
Sandel.
The classes, offered through OCU’s
Community Dance Center, are open to high school sophomores, juniors and
seniors; college students and adults. Classes will meet from noon to 1:20 p.m.
Monday through Thursday from May 15 to June 20.
Rowan serves as chair of the dance
department at OCU’s Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management. She
is a nationally known master ballet teacher and performer. Rowan was trained at
the school of American Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet Moscow and holds a degree
in fashion design and dance from the University of Cincinnati. She has
performed with the Cincinnati Ballet, Dallas Ballet, Garden State Ballet,
Metropolitan Opera Ballet, the Dallas Opera, the Philadelphia Opera, the Tulsa
Opera, Cincinnati Opera and as a soloist at Radio City Music Hall. Rowan has
received Dance Teacher magazine’s National
Dance Teacher of the Year Award and has been inducted into the Oklahoma Higher
Education Hall of Fame. She is a recipient of the prestigious Flo-Bert Award
and the National Dance masters of America President’s Award.
Sandel has taught ballet at OCU for 15
years. She has danced professionally with Ruth Page International Ballet of
Chicago, Chicago Lyric Opera Ballet and Ballet Oklahoma.
Cost is $220 and a basic background in
ballet is required. Students must enroll by May 2 through the OCU Performing
Arts Ticket Office between noon and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at (405)
