OCU Announces New Scholarships, Tuition Reductions, for Creative Writing Program
The Red Earth Low-Residency MFA Program in Creative Writing at Oklahoma City University is pleased to announce five $1,000 merit scholarships for members of its inaugural class.
All merit scholarships will be awarded on the quality of the writing sample supplied as part of the MFA application. Preference will be given to prospective students who complete their application by March 15. Notification of the scholarships will be mailed and also announced at OCU’s annual Creative Writing Festival on April 16. Scholarships must be applied toward the first year of study in the MFA program.
In addition, the Red Earth program is offering $1,000 tuition reductions in the first year of study for all of its inaugural class.
The two-year MFA program includes five residencies, one each summer and each winter plus one at the end of the program. Each residency lasts approximately 10 days. Much of the work can be done away from the school under guidance from a faculty member. The final residency includes a public reading and thesis defense.
Program Director Danita Berg said the OCU Red Earth MFA program is unique because it offers professional writing and pedagogy tracks. Students may choose to study with professional writers and writing instructors in online formats to learn about editing, professional communications and teaching writing. Students can also create their own concentration strand with the help of a faculty advisor.
The course schedule includes class time and small workshop groups to allow students to share ideas. The course design allows the writers to network in order to help each other with their skills even after they finish the program.
The summer residency is slated for July 6-16. For more information about the program, visit the website www.okcu.edu/english/redearthmfa or contact MFA Director Danita Berg at firstname.lastname@example.org.
