Pageant Musical Comedy, SMILE, Plays OCU Oct. 8-10
Oklahoma City University – home to three Miss Americas and scores of other pageant queens – presents the pageant musical comedy SMILE, Oct. 8-10.
The spotlight musical chronicles the backstage troubles of the fictional California Young American Miss beauty pageant, featuring music by Academy Award-winner Marvin Hamlisch (“A Chorus Line”) and book and lyrics by Howard Ashman (“The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin”).
Performances in the intimate Burg Theater are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a 3 p.m. Sunday matinee. All tickets are $10. www.okcu.edu/tickets or 405.208.5227.
“This funny, fast-paced and tuneful musical shines a spotlight on the way pageants shape the dreams and self-image of young women,” said director Karen Coe Miller, who is teaming with music director Chuck Koslowske.
The cast features 25 Bass School of Music students from 14 states: Alex Enterline of Broken Arrow and Kelsey Griswold of Tulsa; Texans Zach Sutton, Jeana Forman, Becca Kreitman, Amanda Martinez, Olivia Cope, Caroline Cradick, Chelsea Owen, and Billy Lowrimore; Margaret Dietrich of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Kassie Lewis of Rochester, N.Y.; Kate Moore of Lincoln, Neb.; Molly Rushing of Watson, La.; Virginians Grayson Heyl and Bridget Cooper; Californians Jennifer Hiemstra and Sheila Donovan; Xavier Jones of Little Rock, Ark.; Lauren Westlake of Chesterfield, Mo.; Melissa Silver of Litchfield, N.H.; Jennifer Soloway of Marietta, Ga.; Elliot Mattox and Adam Fister of Kentucky; and Patrick McAleer of Broomfield, Colo.
