Vienna Kicks Off Symphony Orchestra's Season of Great Cities
Great cities have inspired the 2010-11 season for Oklahoma City University's Symphony Orchestra, beginning Thursday, Oct. 7, with a Vienna-themed season opener.
An Austrian-inspired dinner of schnitzel and strudel will be held in the Atrium of the Bass Music Center beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by a free free-concert talk by Dr. Erik Heine and a free 8 p.m. performance in Petree Recital Hall. The concert marks the debut of Benjamin Nilles as music director of OCU Symphony Orchestra. Highlights of the program include Haydn's Cello Concerto, featuring cellist Alejandro Acosta; Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4, featuring soloist Angelica Pereira Espitia; Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, with Eunkyung Park.
In honor of the evening's theme, a series of large-scale oil paintings celebrating the history of Austrian music by Ernst Wondrusch, a gift from Bill and Pam Shdeed, will be unveiled.
The orchestra season continues with a tribute to Rome on Nov. 30, New York City on Feb. 17, and Paris on April 3. Each concert will be preceded by a themed dinner ($20) in the Atrium, beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by the free 8 p.m. performance in Petree Recital Hall.
