Vienna Kicks Off Symphony Orchestra's Season of Great Cities
Great cities have inspired the 2010-11 season for Oklahoma City University's Symphony Orchestra, beginning Thursday, Oct. 7, with a Vienna-themed season opener.
An Austrian-inspired dinner of schnitzel and strudel will be held in the Atrium of the Bass Music Center beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by a free free-concert talk by Dr. Erik Heine and a free 8 p.m. performance in Petree Recital Hall. Dinner tickets ($20) available from 405.208.5227 or online: www.okcu.edu/tickets.
The concert marks the debut of Benjamin Nilles as music director of OCU Symphony Orchestra. Highlights of the program include Haydn's Cello Concerto, featuring cellist Alejandro Acosta; Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4, featuring soloist Angelica Pereira Espitia; Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, with Eunkyung Park.
In honor of the evening's theme, a series of large-scale oil paintings celebrating the history of Austrian music by Ernst Wondrusch, a gift from Bill and Pam Shdeed, will be unveiled.
The orchestra season continues with a tribute to Rome on Nov. 30, New York City on Feb. 17, and Paris on April 3. Each concert will be preceded by a themed dinner ($20) in the Atrium, beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by the free 8 p.m. performance in Petree Recital Hall.
