Oklahoma Regatta Festival Returns to the Oklahoma River Oct. 7-10
OKLAHOMA CITY — The annual Oklahoma Regatta Festival will be held Oct. 7 through 10 in the Boathouse District on the Oklahoma River. The event will include the Oklahoma City University Head of the Oklahoma regatta, the blu VIP party, corporate rowing and dragon boat racing, OGE NightSprints and a fun, family festival. Admission and parking are free.
The Head of the Oklahoma is considered the premier event of the year for the river, said OCU rowing head coach and Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation Executive Director Mike Knopp.
“We are especially excited for this year’s event as we get to introduce the city and the rowing community to the Devon Boathouse and the Chesapeake Finish Line Tower,” Knopp said. “The momentum for this event has been building along with the river itself, and this year we will push that momentum further with new major developments on the river.”
The events will begin with the blu Party at 6 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Devon Boathouse in the Boathouse District, 616 S.E. 6th St. The blu Party is an annual social event benefiting youth rowing and OKC National High Performance Center athlete development. The focal point of this year’s event will be the christening of the new Devon Boathouse. The event will also include live entertainment, river tours on the Devon Oklahoma River Cruisers and fireworks at the end of the evening. Reserved admission is $75 for individuals and $125 for couples. Visit www.blu2010.com to make a reservation.
The Oklahoma Regatta Festival will begin at 6 p.m. Friday and will feature corporate rowing and dragon boat racing during the OGE NightSprints with fireworks at the conclusion of racing.
The festival will continue from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday with live entertainment, the Olympic Experience interactive exhibit, children’s activities, kayaking, cycling, a wine and beer garden, Oklahoma’s Best vendors, live entertainment and food from some of Oklahoma City’s finest restaurants.
Teams from across the nation will compete throughout the weekend beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday and continuing at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The competitions will feature collegiate, masters and juniors 2.5-mile head races. OGE NightSprints will be held on Saturday evening with a fireworks grand finale.
More than 50,000 people have attended the festival in past years, and officials are anticipating 1,200 athletes from across the nation during the weekend.
“This has become one of the best annual events in the state, and it’s a great chance to show visitors how vibrant, unique and fun Oklahoma City can be,” Knopp said.
The Oklahoma Regatta Festival is a project of the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation and is presented by Chesapeake Energy, Devon Energy and OGE. Champion series sponsors include Coppermark Bank, INTEGRIS Heart Hospital, the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau, Love’s Travel Stops and Country Stores, BancFirst, Total Environment, The Oklahoman, Lamar Outdoor, YP.com, News Channel 4-KFOR, and radio stations KOMA, KMGL, KOKC and KRXO.
