Devon Boathouse to Enhance Oklahoma River Activities
OKLAHOMA CITY – When Oklahoma City University and OKC National High Performance Center athletes celebrate the christening of the Devon Boathouse Oct. 7, the greater Oklahoma City community will have new opportunities to enjoy recreational activities along the banks of the Oklahoma River.
Mike Knopp, head rowing coach for Oklahoma City University and executive director of the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation, said the Oklahoma River is an anchor for community activities and youth programs. Kayak rentals, bicycle rentals, fitness classes and recreational trails are open to the public through the OKC RIVERSPORT program.
“The more elite training functions will occur out of the Devon Boathouse due to its offerings for high performance training,” Knopp explained, adding that those taking classes through OKC RIVERSPORT can enjoy training in the state-of-the-art indoor propulsion rowing tank at the new $10 million, 33,000-square-foot Devon Boathouse. The boathouse will be home to OCU’s rowing and canoe/kayak teams and OKC National High Performance Center programs through US Rowing and US Canoe/Kayak.
Knopp said a growing number of individuals are learning about kayaking and rowing.
“People are starting to understand how accessible it is as we look for ways to promote health and wellness in our community,” Knopp said. “We have one of the premier water venues in the world and people can really take advantage of that.”
Meeting and event spaces at the new boathouse will be open to the public. The Devon Boathouse will feature two levels of event space including a second floor viewing room. Tony Cancemi, private event manager for the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation, said he booked more than a dozen events as soon as he began taking reservations last month.
Knopp said the Devon Boathouse will complement activity on the river.
“It’s very exciting to see the development of the Boathouse District in Oklahoma City,” Knopp said. “We’re going to have another world-class facility with the Devon Boathouse. All of our boathouses will have a very unique function, but they are also designed to work together. This creates powerful opportunities for this community to have access to some of the finest facilities of their kind in the world.”
The boathouse christening will take place during the annual VIP blu party, from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 7. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.blu2010.com.
