Oklahoma City University Rowers Prepare for Stroklahoma
OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma City University will compete against its nearby rival University of Central Oklahoma in the second annual Stroklahoma Regatta Saturday, April 3, on the Oklahoma River.
The four-person boats (4+) will race at 10 a.m. followed by the eight-person boats (8+) at 10:30 a.m.
The OCU Stars are coming off a successful showing with four medals earned at the Heart of Texas Regatta in Austin last month, and the UCO Bronchos have recently returned from the San Diego Crew Classic. Last year at the inaugural Stroklahoma Regatta, the Star’s won the two-person boat (2-) and the four-person boat (4+) races, earning the overall points trophy while the Bronchos won the eight-person boat (8+) race.
Despite the victory, OCU women’s coach Melanie Borger said she isn’t looking beyond UCO this year.
“UCO is a strong and powerful crew with a lot of recent race experience, but the OCU women are ready to continue their winning tradition in the 4+ and show newfound power in the 8+,” Borger said. “We are lucky to share a river and a boathouse with such a dedicated crew like UCO. It keeps our athletes on top of their game at every practice.”
Fans and families are invited to the river to watch the regatta for free. After the racing, spectators can join the athletes for an Urban Market catered lunch at 11 a.m. on the lawn and deck of the Chesapeake Boathouse.
Lunch is $7 and will include a grilled chicken or hamburger sandwich, pasta salad, Caesar salad, chips, cookie and iced tea.
The Chesapeake Boathouse is located in downtown Oklahoma City on Lincoln Boulevard south of Reno Avenue. For more information, call Borger at (405) 552-4040 or e-mail her at email@example.com.
