OCU Dance Students Provide Scholarships for Local Children
OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma City University dance seniors Patrick Galvin and Ashley Durst recently organized a thank you gift for their professors at the Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management. The present isn’t something their dance instructors can open or put on a bookshelf. Rather, it’s something that touches their hearts.
The students in OCU’s American Spirit Dance Company raised funds for three children’s scholarships to the Community Dance Center at Oklahoma City University. Galvin said the gesture was a way to pass on the same gift he and his classmates have already received.
“I realized that the most basic and fundamental gifts the faculty have given us are the rewards and challenges of dance,” he said. “By giving the same gifts they have given us to other people, we are showing our gratitude in the best way we can and we are passing on the gifts of dance to people who maybe don’t have the resources or means to take dance classes.”
OCU’s Community Dance Center provides dance and movement activities for students of all ages in the greater Oklahoma City area. Durst is one of the teachers at the center.
“I see kids come in who truly enjoy dancing, but would not be able to dance if a scholarship was not awarded to them,” she said. “We wanted to give other children the opportunity the dancers in the company have – the chance to take dance classes and perform.”
American Spirit Dance Company students presented the scholarships to their dance professors following the annual Spring Show to show their appreciation for the faculty’s work on the annual dance extravaganza.
“The faculty always reminds us that they don’t need tangible gifts, but rather gestures that capture our genuine respect to the process of putting the show together,” Galvin said. “Hopefully, we are able to help someone else have the same opportunities we have all been given.”
