OCU Sails Into International Waters
The Oklahoma City University Sailing Club will represent OCU, the state and the country during the 42nd Edhec Regatta in Brest, France this month. The university will compete for the Sea Trophy during the week-long international student event that begins April 17.
Barely a year old, the club has been training for the regatta in Lake Hefner using a borrowed 32-foot racing yacht, which requires a crew of eight sailors and a large amount of physical work, according to OCU Sailing club coach Glede Holman.
“The crew has been eagerly anticipating the trip to France since last fall, when we decided to go,” Holman said. “We knew it would take a lot of extra training and dedication, but having the opportunity to sail along the coast of France is an opportunity we didn’t want to miss.”
The team plans to name a skipper soon and will begin assigning positions. Everyone aboard will be expected to know how to perform all positions including trimmers, foredeck, tactician and helm.
“This is a chance to learn more about sailing and how to work as a team. We’ll be competing against sailing clubs from around the world, so we want to make sure we establish a good reputation,” Holman said.
The Edhec Regatta claims to be the largest European sporting event for students. It is expected to draw 140 universities from 10 countries for a total of 180 boats. There will be an estimated 6,000 students, 10,000 spectators and hundreds of thousands of people will watch from home via Internet.
Holman pointed out that so far only one other team from the U.S., the University of California, Los Angeles, has signed up to participate.
Other OCU club members are looking forward to meeting sailors from around the world.
“Once we heard we had to raise $20,000 for this trip we all thought this isn't going to happen,” said club member Hydi Gibson. “But there have been more people who support this team than we ever imagined. We can’t wait to meet some fellow sailors from other countries.”
