Monteiro Presents Free 'Villa-Lobos in Paris' Piano Recital
Award-winning pianist Sergio Monteiro will make his Oklahoma City University solo recital debut at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, in Petree Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
Monteiro, director of piano at OCU’s Bass School of Music, will perform a "Villa-Lobos in Paris" program, focusing on pieces written by the Brazilian composer and his contemporaries in Paris in the 1920s.
Monteiro’s recital will include Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concert No. 3, Vision Fugitives; Albert Roussel’s L'Accueil des Muses; Florent Schmitt’s Ballade de la Neige; Darius Milhaud’s Saudades do Brasil (Botafogo and Leme); Igor Stravinsky’s Piano Rag Music; and Maurice Ravel’s Valses Nobles et sentimentales. Works by Heitor Villa-Lobos to be performed include Rudepoema and Baby's Family No. 2.
The Brazilian-born Monteiro was appointed to the Bass School faculty in 2009.
The Steinway artist came to global attention after winning the grand prize at the 2003 Martha Argerich International Competition in Buenos Aires. His debut with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic under the baton of Charles Dutoit earned a 20-minute standing ovation the Colón Theater.
In the years since, Monteiro has been a featured solo artist in Europe, Asia, South America and North America, collaborating with renowned conductors such as Dutoit, Rafael Frubeck de Burgos, Pedro Ignacio Calderon, Mendi Rodan, Neil Varon, Tsung Yeh, Eduard Schmieder, Misha Raschlevsky, Ira Levin, and Anton Nanut.
He has performed in Moscow with the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra and was featured soloist on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center.
During two years at the International Piano Academy in Como, Italy, he worked with pianists and teachers such as Leon Fleisher, Andreas Staier, Fou T'song, Claude Frank and William Grant Nabore.
He earned his DMA at the Eastman School of Music. Key teachers include Myrian Dauelsberg in Rio de Janeiro and Nelita True at Eastman.
