OCU Cellist, Trumpeter Win 2010 Young Artist Competition
Students from the Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University won the top awards at the 2010 Young Artist Competition, sponsored by the Oklahoma Community Orchestra.
Trumpeter Ryan Beach and cellist Jason Jupiterwala will be featured soloists at the April 20 concert of the Oklahoma Community Orchestra. In addition to the performance opportunity, the 2010 Young Artists Competition awards each winner $750.
The winners’ concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Garvey Center, on the campus of Oklahoma Christian University. Tickets ($10) are available in advance at http://www.okorchestra.org/schedule.htm
In other competition news, OCU trumpet graduate students Steven Del Ross and Robert Redman were selected to compete in the semifinals of the National Trumpet Competition, to be held in Washington, D.C., March 11-14.
OCU’s Ryan Beach finished second in the 2009 competition, which is hosted by George Mason University. Beach was one of six finalists chosen from 43 semifinal competitors, culled from more than 100 trumpeters who submitted recorded auditions.
The trumpeters study with Michael Anderson, OCU's associate professor of trumpet. Jupiterwala is a student of Tomasz Zieba, instructor of cello and associate principal cellist with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.
