Schimek to Conduct Own Works with Harrison Sinfonia
John Schimek, director of Oklahoma City University’s string program, will be guest clinician and conductor with the Harrison Sinfonia Feb. 27. The 4 p.m. Saturday concert in Petree Recital Hall will feature four works composed by Schimek. The Harrison Sinfonia is part of the Guy Fraser Harrison Academy and the Oklahoma Youth Orchestras.
An active clinician, Schimek has worked with groups in 32 states and on four continents. He has presented at national and international conferences, is published in several journals, and was a contributing author in the textbook "Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra."
Schimek was named 2007 Teacher of the Year by the Oklahoma chapter of the American String Teachers Association. He is professor of double bass and music education at OCU’s Bass School of Music and is a member of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.
