National Music Magazine Spotlights Peter Markes '01
A full-page article in a national magazine profiles Oklahoma City University alumnus Peter Markes ‘01, orchestra director at Edmond North High School, conductor of the Oklahoma Youth Philharmonia, and a member of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.
Markes is featured in the January 2010 issue of “Teaching Music,” the magazine of the National Association for Music Education. The organization serves millions of students nationwide, from preschool through graduate school.
Every other year, Markes takes the Edmond North Orchestra on the road to perform in America’s great concert halls. Since his appointment in 2002, the ensemble has played Carnegie Hall, the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, and Chicago’s Orchestra Hall.
Markes graduated from OCU’s Bass School of Music as a double major in music education and instrumental performance. He was concertmaster with the Oklahoma City University Symphony Orchestra, and is now a violinist with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.
Founded in 1992, Edmond North High School has more than 2,200 students; one-fourth of the student body is involved in the performing arts. Student musicians of the 126-member Edmond North Orchestra have a 3.59 grade point average and a 27.8 ACT average.
