Oklahoma City University Student Publications Book Honors McDaniel Presidency
OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma City University’s Student Publications staff honored university President Tom McDaniel and first lady Brenda McDaniel with a commemorative book.
The book, “Tom J. McDaniel: A Presidential Legacy,” was presented during OCU’s annual Light the Campus event Dec. 2 in the Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center. It chronicles the achievements and changes at OCU during President McDaniel’s tenure. The book was a gift to the first couple.
“We wanted it to be a surprise,” said Lizzy Valles, student publications Web editor. “Members of the editorial board worked on it in private.”
Bernie Patterson, provost and vice president for academic affairs, helped the student publications staff plan for the release at Light the Campus. Kenna Griffin, assistant professor of mass communications and director of Student Publications, was the faculty advisor for the book project.
Work on the book was done in addition to the publications staff’s other regular duties of preparing the annual yearbook The Constellation, the weekly newspaper The Campus, and The Campus Online, the newspaper’s Web site.
“All of the hard work was worth it to honor a couple who has done so much for this university,” said Corbin Hosler, student publications editor-in-chief. “It was important to the editorial board that we documented President McDaniel’s tenure in a historical way before he retires in June.”
Copies of “Tom J. McDaniel: A Presidential Legacy” will be distributed to students, faculty and staff through Dec. 16.
