OCU’s Home for the Holidays Dance Extravaganza Returns to the Stage
OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma City University dancers will spread holiday cheer on stage next month to kick off the Christmas season with a show as lavish and fun-filled as anything on Broadway. The OCU American Spirit Dance Company’s Home for the Holidays show runs Dec. 10 to 13.
“The beautiful lighting, fabulous costumes and talented dancers make this show as exciting as holiday offerings in Los Angeles, Chicago or New York,” said Director Jo Rowan.
A line of chorus girls and Tony the Tap Dancing Pony will open this year’s show with a giggle and a wiggle and a whirl across a winter wonderland as Santa and his reindeer join in the fun and dash into the Christmas night. Frosty the Snowman, ice skating ballerinas, penguins, cowboys and tap dancing soldiers wish everyone a Cool Yule this year.
“Joyful skaters in Victorian costumes create the beauty and nostalgia of a picture from Currier and Ives,” Rowan said. “Then on ‘Christmas Island,’ we toss out our winter clothes and enjoy a fantastic sun-filled tap dancing holiday.”
Another catchy scene in Act I is “Toy Trumpet,” which is filled with something for everyone to enjoy from wacky elves to tapping penguins and a dancing bear.
Act II opens with lovers celebrating the most wonderful time of the year, dancing to the “Christmas Waltz.”
“The candle lit ballroom swirls with color as the couples float into a magical holiday memory,” Rowan explained. “Then the rhythm and style of a kaleidoscope of formations in multiple shades of green fascinates with a dance reminiscent of the MGM musicals.”
As always, the show will feature a warm and reverent celebration of Christ’s birth.
“‘Grown Up Christmas List’ expresses a young woman’s dreams of a world free of war and prejudice where right would always win and love would never end,” Rowan explained. “The sacred Nativity is a poignant and breathtaking depiction of a time when gifts were brought to the Christ Child to celebrate His birth. Our show ends with a desire for ‘Peace on Earth’ and a wish for a ‘Happy Holiday’ as 150 dancers fill the stage with a creation of movement in ever-changing patterns in red, pink and white to welcome our audience ‘Home for the Holidays.’”
Show times are 8 p.m. Dec. 10, 11 and 12 and 2 p.m. Dec. 12 and 13 in the Kirkpatrick Auditorium at OCU.
The show is recommended for audience members ages 6 and up. All seats are reserved and cost $22. Group rates are available. For tickets or more information, call (405) 208-5227.
Rowan founded The American Spirit Dance Company in 1981 to celebrate America’s unique contributions to dance through jazz, tap and musical theater and providing students with professional performance opportunities. The company is critically acclaimed in the U.S. and overseas and has become one of the premier performing ensembles in central Oklahoma.
