OCU Invites Neighbors for Free Celebration
Oklahoma City University will celebrate the ninth year of its Light the Campus event this holiday season beginning at 4 p.m. Dec. 2.
This year’s event promises to be a memorable evening with crafts, pictures with Santa and Miss OCU, musical entertainment and a holiday dinner in the McDaniel University Center before the trumpeters call to chapel. The program continues with a candlelight processional and caroling to the Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel, and concludes with the Hanging of the Greens and a chapel service. The celebration is free and open to the campus community and surrounding neighborhood.
Brenda McDaniel, wife of OCU President Tom McDaniel, established the festival as a way to share the university’s spirit of giving to the community.
“This is one of our biggest events of the year, and the tradition seems to grow each time,” Brenda McDaniel said. “OCU’s beauty and charm is at its best this time of year. We’re looking forward to spreading good cheer to all who would like to help us celebrate the season.”
The OCU Steel Drum Band and Surrey Singers will keep spirits high with holiday music while participants enjoy the buffet feast. The Liturgical Dancers and Chapel Choir will perform during the Hanging of the Greens and chapel service.
In the spirit of giving, those who plan to attend are encouraged to bring donations of food, clothing and toys for the university’s chosen charities, the Skyline Urban Ministry and the Exodus House.
Skyline was founded in 1974 as a mission of the Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church. Skyline Urban Ministries is committed to assisting the less fortunate of the community.
Exodus House is also a mission of the Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church and was established in 1998. The mission is dedicated to helping individuals recently released from prison to reintegrate into society.
