Oklahoma City University to Confer Degrees on 600 Students
Devon CEO Larry Nichols to Give Undergraduate Address
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University will celebrate spring commencement May 9, conferring bachelor’s and master’s degrees on more than 600 students.
Devon Chairman and CEO J. Larry Nichols will give the keynote address at undergraduate commencement which begins at 11 a.m. in the Henry J. Freede Wellness and Activity Center, located at N.W. 27th St. and Florida Ave. Nichols will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Oklahoma City University at the ceremony.
Nichols joined Devon Energy in 1970. He became president in 1971, chief executive officer in 1980 and chairman of the board in 2000. Prior to joining Devon, Nichols served as law clerk to Chief Justice Earl Warren and Justice Tom Clark of the U.S. Supreme Court. He then served as special assistant to Assistant Attorney General William Rehnquist in the U.S. Department of Justice. Active in the energy industry, Nichols serves as chairman of the American Petroleum Institute, serves on the board of the Business Industry Political Action Committee in Washington D.C. and is involved with a variety of professional organizations. He has been inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame and has received numerous honors.
OCU will honor OKC Friday publishers J. Leland and Vicki Clark Gourley with this year’s Oklahoma Servant Leader Award which recognizes those who personify the idea of servant leadership, one of the most important aspects of the OCU community.
Oklahoma City University accounting professor Jacci Rodgers will speak to students at graduate commencement which will begin at 3 p.m. in the Freede Center. Rodgers is the recipient of the 2009 Outstanding Faculty Award.
The Oklahoma City University Wind Philharmonic will play at both ceremonies.
The Rev. Chris Dodson, Oklahoma City University alumnus and lead pastor at CrossTimbers United Methodist Church in Moore, will speak at baccalaureate at 9 a.m. in the Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel.
Oklahoma City University School of Law graduates will take part in a hooding ceremony at 3 p.m. May 16 at the Cox Center. Graduates will hear from The Honorable Vicki Miles-LaGrange, Chief U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Oklahoma.
