State Teacher of the Year to Speak at Commencement
Oklahoma City University will hold its fall semester commencement ceremony in the Henry J. Freede Wellness and Activity Center at 4 p.m. Dec. 19 for graduate and undergraduate students.
Heather Sparks, the 2009 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, will give the commencement speech. Sparks is an OCU alumna who now teaches math at Taft Middle School.
Sparks earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from OCU and won the 2007 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. She has 15 years of teaching experience.
The commencement will also feature the second annual awarding of the Oklahoma Servant Leader Award. The award is given to those who personify the idea of servant leadership, one of the most important aspects of the OCU community.
This year’s winners are OCU Alumni Association President Jacque Fiegel and Cathy Leichter, who has volunteered for several projects in the city and on campus including fundraising for practice rooms in the Bass School of Music, as well as funding the Leichter Reunion Center in the Freede Center.
The Freede Center is located on the north side of campus at Northwest 27th Street and Florida Avenue.
