Bass School Professors Lead Key West Program
Bass School professors Jan McDaniel and William Nield Christensen were featured artists at the 2008 Key West Symphony Young Artist Program. McDaniel, Bass School professor of vocal coaching, was the program's musical director.
The summer marked McDaniel's third season with the event, formerly known as SolFest. Dr. William Nield Christensen served his first year as artist-in-residence and voice instructor.
Among the 20 students invited to participate in 2008 were nine present or former Bass School students: undergraduates Justin Brown, Jeana Forman, Dusty Herzog, Holly Robertson and Megan Sherrod, and alumni RaShaun Campbell, Jessica Hilliard, Renée Saindon, and Laura Shofner.
The Key West Symphony Young Artists Program was founded in 1998 by Donna Roll, director of opera at the Longy School of Music in Boston. The program is geared toward career preparation for the emerging opera singer. Master classes, private coaching, and opera scene preparation are covered, as are classes in movement and acting, and career essentials such as auditioning and securing representation. Over the course of the summer, dozens of performances are staged in a range of venues.
