Dr. Michael Raiber is a Professor of Music and holds the Busey Chair in Music Education. For the sixteen years previous to his current appointment in 2013, he taught undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. His public school teaching experience includes thirteen years at schools in Missouri and Oklahoma. Mike is native Oklahoman. He attended high school in the Tulsa area and then earned both a BME and MME from the University of Tulsa. He completed his Ph.D. in music education at the University of Oklahoma. Music teacher education is his passion and his chief focus. His greatest desire is to help prepare quality music educators who will inspire the next generation of music students.
In addition to his teaching, Mike serves at the Director of Teacher Support and Program Evaluation for El Sistema Oklahoma (ESO). In its inaugural year, this program serves the families of over 100 children in Oklahoma City. Modeled after the successful endeavors in Venezuela, ESO seeks to enable social action through music.
Dr. Raiber is also an active researcher and author. He was the primary investigator on the collaborative research team for Oklahoma A+ Schools® (OAS). This team produced a five-volume report on the implementation of the OAS school reform model in Oklahoma schools. He is currently the primary researcher for All Aboard, an integrated math and music curriculum for young children. He has also co-authored a new text (to be released in 2014) titled The Journey from Music Student to Teacher. This book is intended for use in introduction to music education courses.
Mike is the President of the Oklahoma Music Educators Association. He also serves as the Southwestern Division Representative on the Society for Music Teacher Education executive board and is the Southwestern Division Representative for the Music Teacher Education Special Research Interest Group (NAfME). His professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, Oklahoma Music Educators Association, and the Society for Music Teacher Education.
