After completing his course work for the PhD in History and Theory of Music from the University of Chicago, Jake Johnson joins the faculty at Oklahoma City University as both a lecturer in musicology and as a collaborative pianist. In recent years, he has served as an audition pianist for Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma and Music Theatre of Wichita and also worked as staff pianist and vocal coach for Oklahoma City University, DePaul University, and the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival. He has played for master classes with numerous artists and composers, including Thomas Pasatieri, Kelli O'Hara, Kurt Ollmann, Angelina Reaux, and Leona Mitchell. Johnson has also served as music director for productions ranging from La Sonnambula to Bye Bye Birdie. He most recently presented papers at the Great Plains chapter of The College Music Society and the Newberry Library, through which his paper "Construction of the femina in Hildegard's Symphonia" was published. He now is at work on two articles: one discusses the patronage of the late Betty Freeman, while the other explores the possibilities for utilizing time travel in the biography of composer Harry Partch.
A native Oklahoman, Johnson completed the Master of Music degree in musicology from the University of Oklahoma and the Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Oklahoma City University, where he studied with Ernestine Scott. He lives in Oklahoma City with his wife and two daughters and still isn't sure what he should be when he grows up.
