Cory M. Gavito joined the OCU music faculty in 2006. Before coming to OCU, Professor Gavito taught at the Italart institute in Castiglion Fiorentino (AR), Italy, and the University of Texas at Austin, where he served as director of the UT Early Music Ensemble and taught courses in music appreciation. At OCU, he teaches courses in music history, performance practice, and jazz piano, and is the director of the OCU Jazz Arts Combo.

Professor Gavito's research specializes in the seventeenth-century Italian alfabeto song tradition and the tarantella before 1800, and his work has been awarded fellowships from the Newberry Library in Chicago and the A.D. Hutchison foundation at UT-Austin. His research has been presented at conferences of the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music, regional chapters of the American Musicological Society, and the European and Global Studies conference. He also holds research interests in jazz, aesthetics of modernity, notation and improvisation, the history of performance, Latin American popular music, and has published articles and reviews in the Encyclopedia of Musicians and Composers of the 20th Century (Salem Press), Women and Music in America since 1900 (Greenwood Press), and Notes: The Journal of the American Library Association.

Professor Gavito remains an active jazz pianist and teacher, performing regularly with the Oklahoma City Jazz Orchestra and a variety of metro area jazz groups. He has performed with Clark Terry, Carl Fontana, Jon Faddis, Fred Wesley, Ernie Fields Jr., Onzie Matthews, Louie Bellson, John Riley, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, and The Dallas Jazz Orchestra.
