CHORAL PROGRAM

Choruses in the Bass School of Music provide a wide variety of performance opportunities for singers within the Bass School of Music and throughout the university community upon completion of a successful audition. Choruses sing in concerts on campus in a cappella, accompanied or collaborative concerts with other university ensembles, with the Oklahoma Philharmonic, for special events in the community and for music conventions.


AD ASTRA: Named for a significant Oklahoma foundation, Ad Astra ("To the Stars") is the women’s chorus selected from undergraduates and graduates, by audition, at OCU. The ensemble performs a wide variety of select literature for female voices and, in 2008, was the first OCU chorus designated a state honor choir by the Oklahoma Music Educators Association.

CHAMBER CHOIR: A mixed-voice ensemble that demands refined sight-reading skills and performs advanced choral literature, is primarily composed of, but not limited to, upper classmen. A general preference is given to literature from the Renaissance, Baroque and Contemporary Eras.

UNIVERSITY SINGERS: This mixed-voice ensemble primarily composed of, but not limited to upperclassmen, generally performs a cappella and accompanied choral literature from the Classical, Romantic and Contemporary Eras.

UNIVERSITY MEN'S CHORUS: A male chorus selected from undergraduates and graduates at OCU, Men's Chorus performs a wide variety of select literature for male voices.

Civic Center Music Hall*

The University Men’s Chorus and Ad Astra Women’s Chorus join Canterbury Choral Society and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic in the opening concert of Canterbury’s 40th Anniversary Season. The combined chorus of over 200 singers, joined by the “Chorale” from the Canterbury Youth Choruses, Judith Willoughby, conductor, present the 20th-century masterpiece Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.

 

8 p.m. Thursday, October 10

Petree Recital Hall

The Chamber Choir and University Singers will present a concert of varied choral literature representing all musical eras. A portion of the concert will be dedicated to the memory of Joyce Eilers, an OCU alumna who would have celebrated the 50th anniversary of her graduation. Each of the two choirs will present some of her most well-known choral compositions. Free admission.

 

4:30 p.m. Saturday, November 2

Petree Recital Hall

The Chamber Choir and the University Singers will present Joyce Eiler’s music during Homecoming Weekend. The “Chorale” from Canterbury Youth Choruses will also perform. A special tribute from Emily Crocker, head of choral music for Hal Leonard Music will be presented in memory of her teacher, Ms. Eilers. Joshua Hughes, Canterbury Intern will conduct. Free admission.

The Annual Christmas Vespers concerts**

Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel

The four choirs, Vespers Orchestra, Benjamin Nilles, conductor and University Organist, Melissa Plamann collaborate on what has become a sold-out event in the OKC Community. The presentation features choral selections, readings from Scripture and other poetry as well as audience participation concluding with a moving candlelight recessional. The Westminster Choir, Princeton, NJ

The famed Westminster Choir, Joe Miller, conductor present a choir on the OCU campus while on their annual tour. The concert is made possible by the partnership between OCU and Canterbury Choral Society. Tickets are available through the Canterbury office and website.

 

8 p.m. Saturday, March 8

Civic Center Music Hall*

The Chamber Choir and University Singers join Canterbury Choral Society and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic in a performance of the 19th-century masterpiece, Ein deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms.

 

3 p.m. Sunday, April 13 — Palm Sunday

Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel

All four choirs from the Wanda L. Bass School of Music will present choral music from the Lenten and Easter Season. University Organist Melissa Plamann will be featured in the Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein, version for organ, harp and percussion. Free of charge.
