Greetings Campus Community,
I am pleased to guest author this week's edition of Summer Forum and provide a look at some of the services and activities OCU Staff Council will support this year.
I am glad to have the opportunity to serve as president of Staff Council. I joined the university staff in 2011 and work in the dean's suite at the School of Law. I love OCU and the people who work here and enjoy the opportunity to serve not only as a leader in Staff Council, but also as a mentor to our students. After being nominated and selected to Staff Council last year, I served as vice president until transitioning to president July 1. The Staff Council leadership team includes Vice President Gregory Aldridge, Treasurer Angela Rutledge, Secretary Cary Pirrong and Communications Officer Janelle Warlick.
Staff Council has been busy preparing for this year's Staff Breakfast, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 5 in the University Center. I hope you will make plans to join us and hear President Henry's State of the University address.
October 5, 2013 will be Oklahoma City University staff/faculty night during opening weekend for the Oklahoma City Baron's game at the Cox Center. Half price tickets will be available for OCU employees and guests. I will be sending more information in coming weeks about the event and how to purchase tickets.
Servant Leadership is very important to our university and to Staff Council. We have been visiting with Positive Tomorrows about setting up volunteer opportunities for staff to read to students or assist them with their homework. Positive Tomorrows is part of the United Way Organization and it is the only grade school in Oklahoma City serving the city's homeless children. If you are interested in volunteering, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Another mission of Staff Council is assisting employees with training. The council has funding available to staff members to help pay for training opportunities. If you would like more information, please let us know.
We hope to introduce this year a monthly "After Hours Social" at various local restaurants. We also plan to host an OCU movie night on the quad in conjunction with a Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser benefitting the university's Benevolent Fund – so get out your best chili recipe and watch for more details on this exciting event.
These are just a few of the ideas we have in the works for the coming year. Staff Council meetings are held at 10 a.m. on the second Tuesday of every month in Walker Center 151. All staff are welcome and encouraged to attend. You can find previous minutes of meetings on the StarNet Staff Council page. Also, check out our Staff Council Facebook page. If you have pictures of staff events, please send them to us.
I look forward to an exciting and busy school year. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
