Add Event to iCal/Outlook
Location: Sarkeys Law Center Room 102
Details: Shelter Volunteer Program
OLFC provides a volunteer (lawyer or non-lawyer) Mondays through Saturdays to visit the Pauline E. Mayer Shelter and speak with each of the newly admitted children there. The goal is to find out whether the children have any immediate needs (e.g., medicines, appointments of which they are aware) and to ensure that all potential kinship placements are explored. The kids are asked to provides names of people (family or otherwise) with whom they would feel comfortable staying. This information is provided to the volunteer attorney who represents the child at Show Cause. The attorney can then use that information in staffing the case with DHS and the District Attorney before the hearing.

Pilot Program (Volunteer Investigators)
We began this program in the summer of 2013. OLFC will train volunteers to serve as temporary investigators for the public defender who represents a particular child or sibling group. This volunteer's role in the case is limited to the time between the Initial Appearance (at which the parents are served with the Petition alleging that the children are deprived) and the first Pre-Trial Conference hearing. This period of time may be anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks. OLFC provides the volunteer investigator with an Order granting access to records, etc. and a form to be completed by the investigator over the course of their assignment. The goal is to collect information about the case that has not yet been discovered and/or made available to the child's attorney. By providing such information to the juvenile public defender, we allow the case to be off and running from the very first substantive hearing. This program began in Judge Kirby's courtroom, but we have been asked to expand it into all the juvenile courtrooms.
