Canoe/Camp the Spring River, OK

    • 9/1/2013 : All Day
Add Event to iCal/Outlook
Location: Spring River Canoe Trails State Park
near Miami and Quapaw
Details: Canoeing and camping on the Spring River, near Miami and Quapaw…about 2 and one half hours straight up the Will Rogers Turnpike. The car parking and carpooling site is to be determined. We will be camping Friday night at the Spring River Canoe Trails State Park, then get an early start on a 29 mile, two day trip. We will camp Saturday night on a gravel and sand shore site that we will choose along the way. This is a spring fed river beginning in Empire Lake, north of Baxter Springs, Kansas and flows at a mostly consistent, floatable river height. It flows past fields and various riparian species of trees, shrubs, birds and other wildlife coming down to the river for a drink. This is a rather mild river with minimal rapids…mostly Class 1, if that. Those who wish can fish for small mouth bass and catfish along the way. The rest of the river flows through the Cross Timbers oak ecosystem, with bluffs, various rock outcrops and gravel bars or sandy shores along the way. We will be using the Blue Hole Canoe Floats outfitter for our canoe rental, at $30 per canoe per day. Private kayaks will have to pay a separate ferrying fee. Their website is www.blueholeok.org Taking into consideration the carpooling fuel, food and the canoe rental, this will be a reasonably priced weekend on the river. The limit will be 7 for canoeing, plus 2 or 3 more personal kayaks. The cut-off date will be: August the 24th.
