Day Hike and Car Camp Otero, New Mexico

    • 9/2/2013 : All Day
Add Event to iCal/Outlook
Location: Otero Mesa
New Mexico
Details: The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska is home to vast herds of caribou and represents a unique expanse of empty space that is threatened with Oil development. Environmentalists have worked hard to protect from this development but few have seen it in person due to the distance, the challenges and the cost in visiting such a remote stretch of emptiness. Well, what if we had the equivalent in our own back yard, would you visit it then? The Otero Mesa in southern New Mexico represents one of the largest uninterrupted grasslands in the nation, and has been called by many the American Serengeti. Its 1.2 million acres are threatened by the hunt for both natural gas and rare earth metals (the stuff in your smartphone and laptops). The Delaware-size ecosystem also supports 250 bird species in addition to its herd of over 1000 genetically pure Pronghorn. You can learn more about this place at http://www.oteromesa.org/ or by reading the recent article in Sierra Magazine at http://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/201207/otero-mesa-195.aspx.
